T2    ALTAR

T
his high altitude trek of 3 days is easy and suited to most people and leads us through the beautiful mountain area of Altar with its many peaks and lakes. This extinct volcano with its huge horse-shaped caldera shows 9 distinct peaks and ice fields and is located in the Sangay National Park east of Riobamba. On this tour we take packhorses with us and stay in refuges without the need of taking tents.

                   T 2 :
  5 days / 4 nights

Day 1
We leave Quito and head south towards Riobamba and then to Penipe, a small village on the road to Baņos. From there we take the turn-off to the Hacienda de Releche, where we spend the first night and hire the horses for our trek. The whole drive takes 6 hours and gives us ample time to stop along the way and admire the Andes mountains with a close-up of the fire-spewing Tungurahua volcano.

Day 2     After breakfast we start our hike up the narrow mountain valley of Collanes to the refuge of Capac Urco where we stay for the next 2 nights. The hike lasts 4 to 5 hours and on the trail we can admire the fauna and flora of this paramo region. In the afternoon we undertake shorter hikes around the refuge, from where we  have splendid views of the Altar massive. Also many paramo birds can be observed in the grass and the few patches of high mountain forests.

Day 3
In the morning we hike up to the Laguna Amarilla, which is located at 4300m, right in the center of this extinct volcano, which is believed to have reached close to 7000m before its eruption.  Nine majestic peaks with religious names are left in the remaining wall. Also at such close proximity we can admire the moraines and glacier of this massive. Afterwards we return to our campsite. The hike up to the lake and back to camp lasts around 6-7 hours.

Day 4   In the morning we undertake another 2-3 hour  hike into the surroundings and after lunch we begin the hike back to the Hacienda de Releche, where we arrive late afternoon and spend the last night of our trip.

Day 5    In the morning we drive back by jeep to Quito. On this day we also will stop along the way for sightseeing and arrive later in the afternoon in the capital.
