HORSEBACK RIDING

All our equestrian activities take place in the Pululahua Crater, where we have our own Horse Ranch called Finca Colibri. On eight hectares (20 acres) of pasture land we keep 7 horses and they are all year round in this for them open and natural environment. We use Criollo horses, which are medium-sized, sturdy and strong horses, introduced by Spaniards right from the beginning of their conquest of South America.

Our Horseback Riding programs:

R1a1 day

Day 1     We leave early in the morning from Quito and arrive in 1 hour at Ventanilla, the top viewing spot at the crater. There you hike down to the bottom of the crater and arrive at the Finca Colibrí after 45 min. After a short rest we start out on horses and ride for 3 hours along the crater walls, circling Pondoña, the hill in the middle of the crater. On this tour we get to know the whole crater and be in awe of its huge dimension and its rich and diverse flora and fauna. After lunch we return towards Quito with an optional stop at Mitad de Mundo and/or Rumicucho.

                        R1b  2 days / 1 night

Day 1
We leave in the morning from Quito and arrive in San Antonio with an optional stop at Mitad de Mundo and/or Rumicucho. Afterwards we arrive at Ventanilla, the top viewing spot at the crater. There you hike down to the bottom of the crater and arrive at the Finca Colibrí after 45 min. We mount then the horses for the first time and ride on dirt trails around the small farms dotting the crater bottom.

Day 2     We start early in the morning as this tour on horseback takes around 7-8 hours. We pass Pondoña on the left side and continue on to Chaupisacha. The path takes us along a deep canyon through a beautiful cloudforest area. Farther down there is a crossing of the gorge, where at the river we have lunch and after a short rest, we return on the other side of the canyon towards the crater passing Nieblí, a small village. Finally we enter again in the crater on the right side of Pondoña and arrive late afternoon at our farm. After taking care of the horses we return then to Quito.

2 - 4  persons

Price per person  USD 165.-

All our horseback riding programs (click for pictures) are easy and suited even for people, who never were on horsebacks before. If people wish, we make sure that the horses step along at a slow pace without ever getting into a gallop. But of course, if you want, the horses know how to run fast, too. Those horses know very well the terrain as they were brought up there and used by natives for work and travel. Our riding excursions are one or two day outings in the surrounding areas but on demand we could put together several days long treks.

WARNING:
Our programs are probably not for people, who are fanatics or professionals of horseback riding and practice a certain school, like Western riding, English school or whatever. All we do in a nutshell is, we get on a horse and let the horse carry us around so we can enjoy ourselves and the beautiful surrounding landscapes and natural diversity.
