 P4 AMAZON CIRCUIT This roundtrip takes us through part of the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle and Andes mountains, following the route Quito - Baņos - Puyo - Tena - Quito. On this one week trip you experience various distinct ecosystems, like the high altitude paramo regions around Quilotoa, the agricultural Inter-Andean valleys, sub-tropical cloud forests and the tropical rainforest of the Amazon. This excursion is especially suited to people, who like to get to know the rich biodiversity of the country. Day 1 After leaving Quito we drive south on the Pan-American Highway till we reach after 2 hours Lasso, from where we take the road to Sigchos and Chugchilan, a small village high in the Western Cordillera, where we arrive after another 2 hours. In the afternoon we hike around in the region which is comprised mostly of the Toachi valley and offers beautiful views all around. Day 2 Early in the morning we get up and drive to Quilotoa where we arrive after 1 hour. After enjoying the first look into this impressive crater lake, we descend on a small path down to the bottom of the volcano and to the lake shore. We spend some time down there and then return to the crater rim after a 1 hour climb. In the afternoon we leave this region and head east to Baņos. Day 3 In the morning we visit the town and its beautiful surroundings. After lunch we drive down the Pastaza valley to Puyo, visiting on the way many waterfalls and take a ride in a cable car across this mighty gorge. The night we spend in Puyo, a larger town located already in the Amazon basin. Day 4 We visit in the morning the animal center of Fatima, which is on the outskirts of the town. After that we drive on to Puerto Misahualli, where we spend the next night. In the afternoon we enjoy the sandy beach on the river and get to know the band of monkeys living there in the trees along the river. Those monkeys although wild, come often down and check out the belongings of the human visitors. Day 5 Today we leave for the Jaguar lodge, which is located one hour and half down the river Napo. There we explore the primary rainforest with its bountiful fauna and flora. The native guides give us explanations about the medicinal and other uses of the plants and shows us a museum with a display of hunting techniques and household goods. We spend the night at the Jaguar lodge. Day 6 Early in the morning we head to a small river for bird watching and return then for breakfast. Later we head to the other side of the Napo to explore a low lying rainforest with its own unique plants. After lunch at the Jaguar lodge, we return to Misahualli, where we spend the last night of our tour. Day 7 After breakfast we leave the town and passing Tena, drive to the caves of Jumandy. After exploring the huge caves, we continue on by jeep to Baeza, where we stop for lunch. On we continue and drive to Papallacta, where we visit the hot springs and take a relaxing bath. From there over a high pass of 4000m, it is a two hour drive to Quito, our final destination of the week-long excursion.
