D9 TOAZA - RIO BLANCO
Toaza - Rio Blanco is a cloudforest reserve located on the
southwestern slopes of Pichincha mountain, some 30 minutes down
the road from Lloa.
The reserve boasts of many diverse plants, especially orchids and
bromeliads and many birds can be seen along the easy trail
leading down to the river.
8.00 a.m.: We leave Quito and head
south to Lloa, a small agricultural village southwest of the city. On the way there we
have great views to the snow-covered volcanoes Cotopaxi, Antisana and
Cayambe, which are located opposite in the Eastern Cordillera. Reaching Lloa, we
continue on the road, descending to the entrance of this reserve at
around 2500m.
10.00 a.m.: We leave our car behind and
start exploring the reserve by hiking 5 km down to the River Blanco. On
that stretch we will get to know many plants, like the Araceae
family with their huge leaves, orchids and bromliads beside the road or
sitting on the trees along with ferns and mosses. At the river we
stop for a rest and if the waterlevel is not too high we might cross it
and explore further the cloudforest. After that we turn back and hike
the same way up to the car again.
1 p.m.: We drive back up again and
visit some hot springs and a waterfall near Palmira. We explore that
area a little bit or take a bath if you like in the warm waters and drive then back towards Quito.
2 p.m.: We stop at Panecillo, the
hill in the middle of the capital, from where you can see the city
stretching along the valley. After some explanations of the history, we
return to the northern part of Quito.
