D7 PUJILI
Pujili has a very traditional market on Sunday,
where the indigenous people from the surrounding mountain
regions gather to sell, buy or barter their animals and goods. This market is
not at all as touristy and there is little ware for tourists to
buy. Therefore this a market for people who still like an authentic
one without presence of too many tourists.
8.00 a.m.: We leave Quito
at that time and head south on the Pan-American Highway to Latacunga,
from where we take the road going up the Western Cordilleras to La Mana
on the coastal plains. We arrive there after a 2 hour drive.
10.00 a.m.: We start our
market day at the huge square, which is roofed. There the produce market
takes place and we explain the various fruits and vegetables on sale.
Afterwards we explore the surrounding streets, which are full of outside
stalls, which sell everything from clothing, handicrafts, house wares to
almost any useful article.
Close by is the main square with a church and an inposing municipal
building.
12.00 p.m.: We have lunch
and leave then the market area to walk up the stairs leading to a hill a
little bit outside of the town from where you have grand views
to the surrounding valley and the town itself.
1.00 p.m.: We leave the busy market behind us and drive to Latacunga.
the capital of the province. There we stop at the colonial center and
walk around to enjoy its monuments, buildings, churches and squares.
3.00 p.m.: We head
back to Quito where we arrive at 5 pm.
