D2  MITAD DEL MUNDO

On this day trip we get to know Mitad del Mundo or Middle of the World, the famous Equator Line Monument. There we visit the ethnic museum inside the pyramid and the interesting Solar Museum and the French pavillion. Afterwards we move on to the viewing spot of the Pululahua Crater, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world with a diameter of 8 km and the pre-Columbian ruins of Rumicucho. All those attractions are located 25 km north of Quito and in each others vicinity.

9.00 a.m.:     We leave the city and head out northwest to San Antonio de Pichincha, a small town where we arrive after 40 minutes.

10.00 a.m.:
We arrive at Ventanilla, the viewpoint of the Pululahua crater, where you have a breathtaking view of the entire front part of the crater. From there a small path leads into the bottom of the crater where you have the choice of entering it and hiking around the small farms, which are located at the bottom.

12.00 p.m.:     We visit Mitad del Mundo, the Equator Line Monument, where you may take the famous pictures of standing with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and with the other one on the Southern Hemisphere. We visit the small ethnic museum located inside the pyramid-shaped building of the monument. From the balcony we also have splendid views to the surrounding areas. Afterwards we visit the interesting Solar Museum and the French Pavillion. After a stroll through the souvenir shops, we continue our tour.

3.00 p.m:
Our last stop are the ruins of Rumicucho, an Inca fortress, 15 minutes north of San Antonio. The site is on a terraced hill with a ring wall of stones.  Those mostly military structures are always built on strategic locations where one could observe the entire valley.

4.00 p.m.:     Return to Quito, where we arrive at around 5 p.m.
