D12 PASOCHOA
On this day trip we get to know Pasochoa, a small private mountain
forest reserve, 30 km SE of Quito. The forest is situated in an old and
eroded volcanic crater and offers many interesting plants and trees.
It
is also a well-known bird refuge and makes for an interesting
trip for people interested in nature.
8.00 a.m.: We leave Quito at and head
one hour south on the Pan-American Highway to Amaguaņa, a small village, where
the turn-off to Pasochoa Reserve is located. We arrive at the Park entrance
after another 20 minute drive, passing smaller farms and bigger
haciendas.
10.00 a.m.: After paying
the entrance fees, we start on our nature hike on well kept paths inside
the crater. First we keep to the right and ascend 2 hours up to a spot,
where you can see a "Palma de Cera", a palm tree, which grows that high up.
We have then the option of continuing farther up to the end of the forest and it
paramo vegetation or we head then back criss-crossing the crater and a small creek, which runs in the
middle of it. We admire the rich flora and fauna with mountain bamboo, trees,
laden with epiphytes and other plants and flowers. At the entrance is small
interpretation center, where we have a quick look to learn a little bit
of its ecosystem.
2.00 p.m.: We begin our return to Quito,
where we arrive at 4.00 pm. On the way back many volcanoes can be seen
on this stretch of the Pan-American Highway also known as the Avenue of
the Volcanoes.
