C5 COUNTRY ACTION This Enduro motorcycle adventure of 15 days covers all major regions of the country, the Andes mountains, Pacific coast and the Amazon jungle and covers 2300 km. It is suited to drivers of medium to advanced skills with an off-road portion of 60%. Day 1 Before we start our tour we have a orientation session, speaking about safety issues and other aspects so we have all a safe trip. Then we start out on the first leg of our trip, where we cover around 200 km through the central valley to Otavalo. Once we arrive in Otavalo we visit the famous Indian market on the Plaza del Poncho, where you have time to admire the numerous displayed handicrafts. We spend the night in Otavalo. Day 2 After breakfast we drive from Otavalo to the crater lake of Cuicocha, where we stop for breathtaking views of this water filled caldera at the foot of Cotacachi volcano. Then on secondary roads we drop down to El Intag and later continue on towards Nanegalito. The trails lead down steeply the Western Cordilleras till we reach the main road Los Bancos - Calacali which takes us to Mindo, where we spend the second night. Day 3 From Mindo we continue south along the flanks of the Western Cordilleras till we reach Alluriquin, where we start descending up the Toachi river to Sigchos. We continue on then to Chuchiglan. We spend the next night in this small Andean village situated at an altitude of 3200m. Day 4 Today we have a long ride of 450km in front of us and start therefore early. First we move up to 3800m and visit Quilotoa Crater Lake. After glimpsing into the water-filled caldera we continue on and after passing 4000m drop to the coastal lowlands. We move then west towards the Pacific coast till we reach Puerto Lopez, a small fishing village. Day 5 After yesterday's long ride we put in a rest day Day 6 Today we get on our motorbikes again but only move some 40km south to another beach resort called Montaņita using secondary roads through dry tropical forest vegetations. Day 7 Another relaxing day awaits us. Montaņita is Ecuador's surfer paradise and you may consider trying your balance on the boards or just relax at the beach. Day 8 Today we get on our motorbikes again and start out on a stretch of more than 350km towards the Andes mountains again. We take some so-called short cuts on the coastal plains, bad secondary roads connecting the main ones. Later in the afternoon we head up the Andes mountains to Guaranda, where we spend our next night at 2600m. Day 9 Today we drive farther up the mountains and reach the highest point in Ecuador where a road leads too, the refuge of Chimborazo at around 4800m. We spend some time admiring the mighty glacier and if you feel we might hike up to the second refuge at 5000m. Afterwards we head down again to Riobamba, where we spend the next night. The whole day driving is around 160 km. Day 10 From Riobamba we head towards the Eastern Cordillera to the lakes of Atillo. There we use a road in construction which leads down to Macas, a town locted already in the Amazon basin. Day 11 On straight jungle roads we move north again and cross a 120m long suspension bridge on the way to Puyo. From there we take the road up the Andes again and stay in a small hostel outside of Baņos. !80 km is our drive today. of the Andes to Baņos, a small tourist town lying in the Pastaza valley and at the foot of Tungurahua volcano. Today's stretch is a short 150 km but gives us time to relax in the hot springs or visit some of the attractions, the area has to offer. Day 12 Today we use off-road portions in of the Andes to Baņos, a small tourist town lying in the Pastaza valley and at the foot of Tungurahua volcano. Day 13 A rest day in Baņos, a small tourist town lying in the Pastaza valley and at the foot of Tungurahua volcano, awaits us. We have time to relax in the hot springs or visit some of the attractions, the area has to offer. Day 14 From Baņos we return back to Quito by way of Cotopaxi National Park. Day 15 This a reserve day which might be used in case of any emergencies.
