 A6 AMAZON EXTENDED (9 days) On this extended 9-day program to the Amazon we get to know large regions of the rainforest. First on our drive to Coca, we experience how humans changed this special environment by farming and exploiting the oil hidden in its ground. Then we head downriver on the Napo into still primary rainforests where we can appreciate the enormous wealth of the diversity of the forest. We observe there larger animals like monkeys, sloths and caimans and a multitude of birds. Enormous trees, medicinal plants and flowers will also be encountered in those undisturbed areas. Day 1 Arrival at Quito airport and transfer to hotel in Quito. Depending on your arrival time, a visit to the old colonial center or another attraction in Quito is scheduled. Day 2 We start our adventure by driving from Quito to Coca, a 7 to 8 hour trip. On the way we will stop at the San Rafael Waterfalls, the highest and mightiest fall in Ecuador which lies in the higher Amazon region and is also famous for its bird population. We will spend 2 hours there hiking in the area and having lunch. On a clear day we have also a splendid view of the active volcano El Reventador, an active volcano. We spend the night in Coca and get ready for tomorrow's boat trip down the river Napo. Day 3 In the morning after breakfast we leave by motorized canoe for the rainforest lodge. There, after lunch we explore for the first time the primary tropical rainforest with its bountiful fauna and flora. A native guide accompanies us and gives us explanations about the medicinal and economic uses of the various plants. Day 4 Early in the morning we head out to the small rivers and lagoons in small dugouts for bird watching and return then for breakfast. Afterwards we undertake another hike in the forest to learn more about the vegetation and get also to know about the fauna. After lunch we visit a native family, where we learn about the daily life of the native Indians. Day 5 In the morning we hike to an observation tower and climb the 35 m high observation tower to observe the life in the forest trees canopy, which otherwise could not be seen. Then we go out in dugouts to the lagoons and try our hand at fishing piranhas and other fish. In the night we undertake a short hike into the forest to experience and observe nocturnal animals. Day 6 Today we try to locate larger animals in the forest. On certain spots we await and observe monkeys, sloths and birds. In the afternoon we have some fun and have a competiton of blowpipes. In the evening we go out by canoe to look for caimans. Day 7 In the morning we undertake another trip on the lagoon to observe more animalsand undertake another short hike through the forest. After lunch we return by motorized boat to Coca. Day 8 We drive back to Quito by way of Loreto. We will pass the Sumaco volcano and stop in Baeza for lunch. Before reaching Quito, we stop in Papallacta at the Hot Springs to relax after the long journey through the tropical rainforest. . Day 9 Depending on your departure time, a visit to the old colonial center or to another sightseeing attraction in Quito are scheduled. Transfer to the airport and return to your country.
