Day 11: Starting early next morning
we hike towards our base camp at the foot of Ojos del
Salado.
Various volcanoes can been admired form the base camp called
Atacama, located at 5200m.
Day 12: We carry food provisions
up to our final camp at 5800m. Looking back towards Atacama campsite.
Day 13: We stay one night
at the small refuge of Tejos, considered the highest located refuge
in the world.
Looking up in the evening to next day's
mighty challenge, climbing Chile highest point.
Day 14: Rise and shine
early for the climb just when the morning light comes up east.
After a
long stroll up the sandy slope, reaching the snow filled
crater and getting a close look at the peak.
On top
of the highest volcano in the world with views into lower active volcanic
craters on the southern side.
After
a light snowfall at night the surrounding peaks are nicely coated
giving a nice panaroma at descent.
Day 15: Leaving the Andes, we get to
know some more interesting landscapes and rock formations.
Day 16 - 19: Arriving at Pan de
Azucar, a national park situated on the Pacific ocean. It offers
beaches, wild west like landscapes, wildlife, enough to enjoy
some nice days after our long mountain excursion.
