XVI Finally arrived the morning of ascension we all anxiously awaited
XVII Looking up to the top, it seems a long way off (right)

XVIII Fighting our way up and passing
Camp Berlin used by some as their final site

XIX The weather was on our side with sunny skies and hardly any wind

XX  Taking a rest and admiring the camera (J.V.) XXI  Rocks, stones, gravel, sand and snow

XXII From Independencia the summit looks already near but a few hours are still left

XXIII Crossing the transvers to the Canaleta with great views to the west (J.V. photo to the left)

XXIV From the Canaleta looking down to the dirt covered Horcones Glacier extending seemingly endlessly

XXV Also it allows a view to the steep Southern wall, a challenge only to the best climbers

XXVI Fighting one's way up with some resting along to catch one's breath and at last reaching the summit, aptly named the Roof of the Americas

XXVII Celebrating with Gerhard whose sheer determination got him up to the highest point in America (right)
Above Joel and he displaying his native Austrian flag

XXVIII With Joel helping to expose his more improvised red-white-blue French flag (J.V.)

XIX Tired but happy we descend and are
rewarded by a another wonderful sunset

XXX Last view of the colossus called the Rock Guardian from the airplane (J.V.)
