B6 OTAVALO
Otavalo is an Indian town located in a beautiful mountain region,
north of Quito
on the Pan-American Highway. The Indians of this region are famous for the
weaving of textiles, which has a history of 4000 years and the town boasts of a
great market, where you can buy or admire their work. The town is also surrounded by
beautiful scenery with mountain peaks and lakes, which offers great mountain
biking trips.
B6a: 1 Day (Mojanda
Lakes)
Day 1 After
a 2 hour drive on the Pan-American Highway north to Tabacundo we begin our
biking expedition. The first part is a long and hard climb up on a dirt track to
the lakes of Mojando. There we take a well-deserved rest and lunch. After that
we begin the downhill part of our biking, riding on a gravel road towards
Otavalo. The bike trip takes all day and covers around 50 km of roads. From
Otavalo we return by jeep to Quito where we arrive after a 3-hour ride.

B6b: 2 Days / 1 Night (Mojando –
Rio Intag)
Day 1
Same as Day 1 above, instead of driving back we spend the night in
Otavalo.
Day 2
In the morning we start out early in the morning and head towards the
Cement factory. From there you begin biking on towards Apuela, a small village
located in the Intag cloud forest region. You go mostly downhill on a gravel
road along the Intag River. After a few hours bike ride we
reach the Thermal Baths in Intag we take a deserved break. After that we drive
back to Quito where we arrive after a 5-hour jeep ride.
