B4    PAPALLACTA

The road from Quito into the Amazon region passes through Papallacta, a small town located in the Eastern Cordillera, famous for Hot Springs. Papallacta lies at an altitude of 3200 m and is surrounded by beautiful paramo regions and the Antisana glacier. A gravel road leads down to the tropical rainforest along a beautiful river valley, where you see small waterfalls cascading down the steep rock walls. The biking downhill runs on this particular excursion reach from 4000m to 2800m.

                           B4a:

Day 1
After a 1 ½ hour drive east of Quito we arrive at the starting point of our biking trip, the Virgen of Paramo, where the pass from Quito valley into the Amazon basin reaches its highest point at around 4000m. You, then descend by bike down the eastern slope to Baeza, village located at 1800 m. The first half hour is on asphalt road with the other 3 hours on gravel road along a river valley with a beautiful changing landscape from high Andean Paramo region to sub-tropical cloud forest vegetation with waterfalls interspersed into it.
