B2 PULULAHUA
Pululahua is a large volcanic crater with
a diameter of up to 8 kilometers and one of two in the world where people live and farm. This
crater, which is located 20 km northwest of Quito is a National Biological and
Geological Reserve with a great variety of plants, some of them endemic and it also
hosts many birds, butterflies and small mammals. Apart from that it offers
spectacular downhill runs into the crater bottom and beyond that along a deep
gorge into sub-tropical cloudforest regions.
B2a: 1 Day
Day 1 After
a one hour drive northeast of Quito, we begin our biking experience at the
Hacienda San Jorge. There you start your first leg of your tour. First you
climb up to the park entrance, some 5 km away. After that warm-up,
we begin our descent to the crater bottom on a
gravel road which takes about an hour. Arriving at the bottom, you follow then the road
on a fairly flat part to the Finca Colibri for refreshment and lunch. In
the afternoon you bike on a gravel road out of the crater
towards Niebli passing the opening of the crater along a deep gorge. There the
excursion ends and jeep awaits you and drives you back to Quito with an
optional stop at Mitad del Mundo.

B2b: 2 Days / 1 Night
Day 1 We
start early in the morning in Quito and drive by jeep a short distance north
till we reach the gravel road leading to Nono. There you get on the bike and
start out on an uphill portion to 3300m. From there the road drops down steeply
to Nono, where we arrive in 2 hours. We take then the road leading out to the
main road to Calicali. We follow another gravel road leading to Niebli, another
2 hours on the bike struggling up- and downhill. There we take a well deserved
break having lunch at the bedge of the deep gorge, enjoying the great views at
same time. Afterwards it is 1 hour
mostly uphill to reach the Finca Colibri.
Day 2 You start
early
in the morning biking out of the crater taking a difficult small trail
leading to Chaupisacha. Most of it is downhill along the deep gorge on the other
side of Niebli. This takes some 3 hours and afterwards the jeep takes you
back to Quito. On the way back we may stop at Mitad del Mundo
to visit the Equator Line Monument.
