Bird
Watching
Pululahua
National Reserve offers good Bird Watching opportunities. The reserve
has quite a few distinct habitats, which attribute to a great
variety of birds.
The flat front part of the crater at 2500m is agricultural land with
hedges, solitary trees, tree groups and shrubby areas and reaches up to the
surrounding forested crater walls with mostly small trees and shrubbery which reach up to 3000m. Also some grassland vegetation is
interspersed in that area.
The lower and steeper back part of the crater has a more
abundant cooler cloud forest vegetation (with bamboo and denser growth) at
an altitude of 2300m.
Exiting the crater, a deep canyon (depth up to 440 m) with
a lush subtropical cloud forest vegetation (with more and higher trees) drops down to
1800m.
Bird List
Following are listed the birds as identified by Celeste, a student of
ornithology, in a 4-day span from
Dec. 1st to 4th of 2000.
Note: In the last column is the trail and area noted, where the
birds were seen. Click to the trail
map for orientation.

Invitation to Ornithologists:
As an inventory list of birds in the Pululahua
reserve apparently doesn't exist, I invite any inspiring birder to complete this task.
As my contribution I will provide free transport, guiding and stay at Finca
Colibri.
