Biking Excursions
The Pululahua crater offers great
mountain biking excursions (click
for map) for everybody on roads leading from 3000m down to 1800m. Those
gravel or dirt roads are hardly used by any motorized vehicles and therefore
almost entirely at your disposal. They offer great views and pass through
forested regions where you can observe the many plants and flowers.
What follows are descriptions of Biking trails:
B1:
Crater to Mines
On this biking excursion you experience beautiful
scenery, a deep canyon, vegetation changing to sub-tropical, fields of sugarcane
and much more. You start out from Finca Colibri on a 2 hour ride out
of the crater and head down on a gravel road towards Nieblí, a small village which lies west to
Pululahua and at an altitude of 2000m. From there you continue on down to
abandoned limestone mines at 1800m, where the road ends and the jeep awaits you
to bring you back to the farm.
B2:
Moraspungo to Crater
You start at the Hacienda San Jorge,
which is just off the main road and at the entrance to the gravel road which leads
to the Park gate at Moraspungo. This first leg is an uphill struggle to get you
warmed up. Once arriving at Moraspungo, it is a downhill ride on a steep and
winding road, leading through dense vegetation of mountain bamboo and other
plants. Once you reach the crater bottom you take the right fork which leads into
the front part of the crater and to the farm. This whole stretch takes around 2
1/2 hours.
B3:
Calicali to Farm
This bike ride of 5 hours starts at the
Hot springs just down the road of Calicali and continues on the road which leads
to Niebli and from there into the crater. The first part is an up- and downhill
struggle till you reach the small village of Ilobamba, from where a smaller secondary
gravel road leads down to Niebli, passing a larger hacienda. From
there you take the right turn and struggle uphill into the crater and on to the
front part where Finca Colibri is located.
