Quito
is the cultural hotpoint of the country and has various museums and exhibitions of interest. In the old colonial center churches and traditional buildings house expositions of mostly religious and colonial art whereas in the modern city you find more contemporary art shows. The Equator Line Monument Mitad del Mundo on the outskirts of Quito also is home to several exhibits. Do not plan to visit museums on Monday as most are closed on the first day of the week

This is the "must see" museum in the capital. Its home is in the huge glass building of Casa de la Cultura and shows the whole range of  cultural achievements of Ecuador beginning with the Valdivia culture and ending with modern art. On the ground floor is the gold museum.

Guayaquil
is the largest city of the country and has a good selection of museums. The best ones concentrate on archeological findings from pre-Columbian coastal cultures which were the first ones established on the South American continent. Apart from amazing pottery and gold treasures expect exhibits of colonial and modern paintings and sculptures.

Cuenca
is the cultural center of the southern Andes region and boasts of several museums which are spread around in its beautifully preserved colonial center. Colonial art is at the heart of many exhibitions but also archaeological finds of pre-Columbian cultures, modern paintings and sculptures can be appreciated in various exhibits.

PARQUE ARQUEOLOGICO INGAPIRCA
NEAR THE VILLAGE OF INGAPIRCA.
2 HOURS NORTH OF CUENCA
PICTURE SITE

This Inca complex was mostly a ceremonial site, used for worship and astronomy. It was built upon an older Cañari site after conquest in the 1470's. The main attraction is the intact Temple of the Sun. A small museum is also located on the grounds.

 It was built by the Inca invaders in the 15th century as a military outpost but also served for ceremonial and astronomical purposes. Presently only the rock foundations are left.

IN THE VILLAGE OF AGUA BLANCA
MACHALILLA NATIONAL PARK

 On this site you see open graves where this pre-Columbian culture buried their dead in large ceremonial urns. A small museum is also part of the complex.
