The town of 2000 people is situated on a beautiful white sand beach
towards the open ocean.
Lagoons surround the small town and you can observe White-cheeked Pintails and Black-necked
Stilts in its shallow waters.
Semipalmated Plover, Lava Gull and Common Gallinule
are also frequently encountered there.
The main attractions however are the gracefulflamingos. Greater Flamingo is the only species found in the
archipelago but not endemic, occurring in other regions of Central and
South America.
Outside of the town exists a tortoise breeding center, where
young are raised in confinement and then later released into the wild
again.
This becomes necessary as giant tortoises are endangered, mainly by
the actions of feral goats and pigs.
Beaches and a dry tropical forest surround the settlement.
Apart from the lagoon, sand beaches and
introduced palm trees are the main attractions of small Puerto Villamil.
