Cloudforest Reserve Mindo - Nambillo

The cloudforest reserve of Mindo - Nambillo is situated on the western slopes of Pichincha volcano at an altitude of 1400m to 4000m, comprising steeper mountainous slopes.

It is covered by a dense cloudforest through which crystal clear mountain rivers flow.

Many orchids with guesses of up to 1000 species are found there. many of the most attractive are those of the genus Dracula.

This reserve is part of the Choco forest region, comprising part of Western Colombia and Ecuador. It is an important birding area with interesting features like a Cock-of-the Rock leks, where the the bright red males meet.

The Pale-mandibled Aracari, Toucan Barbet and Golden-headed Quetzal (from left to right) are Choco endemics and dependent on the forest for their survival.

Bird watching is one of the main nature event of the reserve and attracts birders from around the world.

Smaller songbirds include warblers, tanagers and many others, alltogether some 300 bird species can be found here.

Insects are always part of a well-functioning forest ecology.

Damselflies, butterflies, beetles, true bugs and grasshoppers are some of the many insects.

Frogs are also abundant in the reserve and are often well camouflaged and easily overlooked.

Tourist attractions are rivers and waterfalls like Nambillo, which invites for a refreshing bath. Another activity it offers is river tubing.

Trails lead through the forest crossing rivers and leading to other cascades.

A look down to the valley, which is used for farming and pastures. At the back the small town of Mindo can be seen.
