For most tourists, from the very young to the very
old,
lodges are the best alternative, in order to get to know tropical
rainforests as they offer a certain degree of comfort.
All lodges in our catalogue provide shelter, food and guided activity
programs in the surrounding region of forests, rivers and lagoons.
There exist many price classes
among the lodges, which have to do mostly with the comfort of the cabins
or rooms, quality of service and food and less with what you may see
and experience.
The activity programs, all those lodges offer, are very similar and involve
hikes through primary forests with explanation of the plants and their
uses, canoe trips on the rivers and lagoons to observe wildlife, visit of
native people homes, etc....
More detailed description follows an the
individual pages.
There are 3 major centers from which the trips to the
lodges start.
All lodges in our catalogue do not include the trip from Quito or another
place to those starting points. The details how to get there and how much it costs
are given in the proper chapters.
1) Puerto Misahualli (Upper Napo)
In
the small village of Ahuano is
the modern tourist complex of
Casa Suizo
located.
How to get there:
You have the
choice either by public bus (around $12 both ways) or
private transport. No flights are available. All lodges will arrange
private transport from and to Quito if desired.
2) Coca (Lower Napo)
The starting point for the lodges in the Lower Napo river regions is the
provincial capital Francisco de Orellana, commonly known as Coca.
The four lodges in our catalogue are situated downriver from Coca, starting point
of those trips.
Yarina,
cabins built in a traditional style, is the closest of them all, 1 hour east of Coca.
Then
follow the exclusive
Sacha
lodge
and
La Selva,
one of the first lodges to operate ecologically in the Amazon rainforest.
Yuturi
is farthest down, some 4 hours downriver, located on a small lagoon.
How to get there:
You have the
choice either by airplane from Quito ($120.- roundtrip), public bus (around $20 both ways) or
private transport.
Airplane tickets can be arranged by us.
3) Pastaza
Kapawi
is a newer and exclusive lodge located on the Pastaza river.
How to get there:
Your main choice is by small airplane from Quito to there and back at
a cost of $224.- and arranged by the lodge. If you are a larger group, boat transport could
also be arranged by the lodge.
Note: Most but not all lodges provide an English
interpreter.
Only one lodge (Sacha) has sometimes a German translator.
If you
desire, we can provide you with our own English / German guides,
accompanying you to the lodges. The extra cost would be $50.-
a day plus
transport costs from and to Quito. In this case you may consider also
private transport provided by us as that will be more economical to you.
What to bring to the Rainforest Lodges:
- Light clothing
- Rain Gear
- Hat
- Insect repellant
- Sun cream
- Flashlight
- Passport
Rubber boots
will be supplied by the lodge but
if you need sizes bigger than #45 European size or 11 American size, then
you should bring your own.
