The
Ecuadorian part of the Amazon basin is one of the easiest in South
America to get to and visit in
order to experience a Primary Tropical Rain Forest and get to know its
diverse flora and fauna (click to
tour.amazon pictures). After getting by bus, airplane or
private transport into the bigger
Amazon towns,
the transport takes then part on the rivers in motorized canoes. Apart from the rich
biodiversity (information.ecosystem.rainforest)
of the various tropical rainforest
habitats, this region is also known for its ethnic
indigenous population (information.ethnic.amazon).
Organized Tours:
We can offer you two kinds of
trips, staying at rainforest lodges
and enjoying their activity
programs or our own adventure tours, which are more for
active people,
who do not mind less comfort in order to see more interesting forest
regions.
RAINFOREST LODGES
There are many rainforest lodges in the Ecuadorian Amazon and we offer you
a few, which always got good reviews by former guests
and clients, who
stayed there.
The first rainforest lodge and also the most comfortable is located in the Upper Napo region,
near the small village of
Ahuano and is called
Casa Suizo
as its owner is of Swiss origin.
The next four lodges are situated in the Lower Napo regions,
downriver from Coca, the starting point
to reach those lodges.
Yarina,
a lodge built in the traditional Quechua style, is the closest of them all,
less than one hour by
boat east of Coca.
Then
follow the exclusive
Sacha Lodge,
2 hours downstream and
La Selva,
one of the first lodges to operate ecologically in the Amazon rainforest.
Yuturi
is farthest down, some 4 hours downriver, set at a small lagoon.
Our last lodge in our catalogue is the comfortable
Kapawi
lodge, located on the Pastaza River in Achuar territory.
ISLAZUL
ADVENTURE TRIPS
Our own trips are more for adventurous people.
We go by motorized canoes to uninhabited forest regions and look for
larger animals,
which cannot to be found close to the lodges anymore. We stay the whole time in
tents and move from one place to another.
We offer you five unique expeditions, leading to distinct primary
rainforest regions of the Amazon. Our first and easiest one, leads us
east from Coca to
Pañacocha, a beautiful region of lagoons,
famous for its bird population and river dolphins.
The next two excursions start south of Coca and lead partly into the
Yasuni National Park, largest protected rainforest region in the
country. Our
Tiputini
and
Yasuni
adventures are set out especially to look for larger wildlife, like
tapirs, cats and anacondas and take mostly along rivers.
Our
Cocha Lakes
expedition is ideally suited for people who like to capture wildlife on
pictures or films as we visit three lagoon regions.
For people, looking for an unique and longer
Amazon tour we have a 3-week boat trip from Coca to
Iquitos, Peru
and back again in our program.
A note of caution:
Travelers, who wish to visit the tropical rainforest primarily to
observe larger animals in the wild, will be mostly disappointed. Although they
are out there, it is extremely difficult to get a glimpse of them and
especially around the jungle lodges you will not find them with the
exception of the plentiful insects and birds.
To see for instance jaguars, tapirs or anacondas, you have to go to
remote areas like in our own adventure programs but even there you have
to be lucky to see one of them as they are few and shy.
Also for tourists, who still have romantic notions of primitive Indian
tribes, there will be more disappointment as modern times have also caught up
in the jungle and contact with the rest of the population brought changes to the lifestyle of
Indians. For example, jeans
and
T-shirts by far already outnumber traditional clothing and modern
household goods replaced the old earthen ware.
But all that said, it is still a worthwhile experience, which
should not be missed, especially getting to know the rich biodiversity
of the tropical Amazon rainforest, which is worldwide the ecosystem
where the most species of life can be encountered.
Just do not go there with false expectations
and be disappointed and
therefore not enjoying,
what it still does offer you.
Important
Note:
Be advised that major safety
problems exist along the Colombian border, especially around Lago Agrio
and Cuyabeno National Park in the Amazon regions.
We strongly advise against visiting those regions.
